Eastern Cape Government Condemns Planned Illegal Shutdown in Buffalo City Metro
Buffalo City Metro, March 24, 2025 – The Eastern Cape Department of Transport and Community Safety has expressed serious concern over the planned illegal shutdown by MELTA in Buffalo City Metro. MEC Xolile Nqatha has issued a strong warning to the organizers, emphasizing that their actions must not violate the rights of other citizens.
Reports of circulating posters and voice notes on social media calling for public participation in the shutdown have prompted the provincial government to take a firm stance. MEC Nqatha has reassured the public that Tuesday, March 25, 2025, remains a normal working day, and law enforcement agencies will be deployed to ensure stability and safety across the metro.
“As the provincial government, we are making a clear call to the public to remain vigilant and report any issues encountered on the roads to our law enforcement agencies,” said MEC Nqatha. “We cannot allow anarchists to infringe upon the rights of citizens whenever they choose. Those responsible for this illegal shutdown will face consequences if their actions disrupt public order.”
Authorities have urged residents to carry on with their daily activities without fear and to report any acts of intimidation or roadblocks. Law enforcement will be on high alert to prevent disruptions and ensure that businesses, schools, and essential services operate without interference.
The government also reminded the public that there are legal avenues for addressing grievances. Citizens who feel unfairly treated by law enforcement are encouraged to seek justice through the courts or the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) rather than resorting to unlawful actions.
